Madison’s Edgewater project earns split decision from pair of committees

The long-debated proposal to redevelop the Edgewater Hotel won one of its two city battles early Tuesday morning and appears ready to face a final vote from Madison’s Common Council.

“We got a boost of momentum,” said Bob Dunn, president of Brookfield-based Hammes Co., the company proposing the estimated $98 million redevelopment. “I think we’re making the case about what the public space can become for this city, and that’s a great destination.”

The city’s Board of Estimates, on a 4-3 vote early Tuesday morning, approved Hammes’ $16 million tax incremental financing request, which will be used to help pay for a public terrace measuring nearly one acre that provides access to Lake Mendota from Wisconsin Avenue.
